Doha Briefing at the UN – Focusing on Families to Support the Implementation of the SDGs

Time: Jan 29, 2018
Location: United Nations Headquarters, NY, USA

The Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), a member of Qatar Foundation, in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations (UN), held its Doha Briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday, January 29.

The briefing, titled ‘Focusing on Families to Support the Implementation of the SDGs’, was attended by diplomats, UN officials, and NGO representatives participating in the 56th session of the Commission on Social Development, which is taking place from January 29 to February 7.

The objectives of the briefing were to present the findings of DIFI’s International Expert Group Meeting (EGM) held in Doha in November 2017 on ‘Integrating a Family Perspective during the localization of SDGs in the Arab World: Challenges and Aspirations’, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund. It also explored the relevance of the EGM’s findings and recommendations to NGOs working at the regional and international level. Additionally, the EGM aimed to highlight the value of investing in family policies that focus on youth and why this is important in the Arab world.

The briefing opened with introductory remarks from H.E. Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, and Ms. Noor Al Malki Al Jehani, Executive Director of DIFI. Presentations followed from Ms. Renata Kaczmarska, Focal Point on the Family, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, on ‘UN Perspective on the Family Policy and the SDGs’; Dr. Anis Ben Brik, Family Policy Director, DIFI, on ‘Integrating a Family Perspective in the Localization of the SDGs’; and Dr. Nader Kabbani, Director of Research at the Brookings Doha Center, on ‘Arab Youth Within the Context of Family Policies’.

DIFI is a global policy and advocacy Institute working to advance knowledge on Arab families, through research, and promote evidence-based polices at the national, regional, and international levels. The Institute has special consultative status with United Nations Economic and Social Council.
