Protecting the Best Interests of the Child in Cross-Border Family Disputes

Time: Mar 29, 2016
Location: Four Seasons Hotel, Doha - Qatar

Promoted dialogue and consolidated interaction among regional government officials, judges, independent experts and other competent regional authorities and stakeholders in family disputes affecting children.

DIFI and the Ministry of Justice in Qatar, in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada and the Hague Conference on Private International Law, hosted the Regional Seminar. The Seminar aimed to explore the regional perspectives on children’s rights in the context of cross-border family disputes, especially those that result in illicit transfer of children across international borders, to provide information on child protection agreements under the auspices of the Hague Conference on Private International Law and how it relates to the Gulf Region countries. Furthermore, the seminar aimed to examine existing alternative mechanisms to resolve disputes -such as family mediation, relating to the legal systems derived from or affected by Sharia, and other legal systems in the Region that can be used to deal with cross-border family disputes, and to strengthen the international legal cooperation, seeking solutions that take into consideration the child’s best interests when resolving such difficult issues.

Representatives from the Ministries of Justice of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) participated in this Seminar. The seminar was also attended by judges from these countries, law academics, and institutions concerned with the family and children in Qatar.
